Elder destroys Wiggins!

January 24, 2004

By Jose E. Santiago with FightNews.com

Ebo “The X-Treme Machine” Elder made quite an impression on the sold-out crowd Friday night at the Tabernacle in the heart of Atlanta GA, as he totally obliterated Tyrone Wiggins with a 3rd round KO win. Ring rust was not in evidence as, despite over a 2 year layoff, Elder looked great as he worked the body and head with vicious combinations.

In round one the taller Wiggins was determined to keep the fight on the outside as he attempted to land quick jabs to the head and body. But, to no avail, the southpaw Elder used his speed to nullify the jab by landing countering left hooks to the body of Wiggins. As Elder continued to destroy the body the end was near for Wiggins as he began to clinch every time Elder would work his way to the inside. Elder finished the round with one more tenacious combination to the body.

In round two Elder continued to counter Wiggin’s shots with crisp lefts to the ribs and solar plexus of Wiggins. Out of desperation, Wiggins begins to throw wild haymakers in hopes of landing anything, but Elder calmly dodged and countered. Unable to take the onslaught of body shots Wiggins once again began to hold every time Elder attempted to connect on the inside. After multiple warnings, referee Jim Korb deducted a point as Wiggins would refuse to stop holding on the inside.

After concentrating on Wiggins’ body in the two previous rounds, Elder started to land hard shots to the head. Midway through round three as Wiggins once again tried to hold, the experienced Elder stepped back and landed a text book three punch combination that finally dropped Wiggins. As Wiggins slowly got up and beat the count, Elder calmly stepped towards Wiggins and allowed him to throw wild punches as he countered nearly everything one, Wiggins went down again with a straight left to the head. Jim Korb took a close look at Wiggins as he counted, but it wasn’t necessary as Wiggins’ corner stepped in and asked that the fight be stopped.

When asked how he felt to be back in boxing Elder responded: “I’m so thankful to be back and thankful for all of this support….” As the sold-out crowd chanted “Ebo…Ebo…Ebo”.

In other action, Xavier “The X-man” Tolliver destroyed late substitute Walter Gilliam. Tolliver came in landing at the sound of the bell. Working the body and head of Gilliam, Tolliver didn’t allow him to get anything off as he totally outclassed Gilliam with a first round TKO.

Joe Harris wins a close 4 round decision over local Atlanta fighter Chris Jordan. All three judges scored the contest 39-37.

Five time Heavyweight title holder Evander Holyfield was in attendance to give the First Annual Undisputed Productions "Georgia Fighter of the Year Award" to O'Neil Bell.
